Ingredients

3 tablespoons unsalted butter

1 medium thinly sliced onion

1 pound ground beef

8 slices american cheese

8 slices marbled rye bread

Directions

Melt 1 tablespoon of butter over low heat in a medium size skillet. Add the onion and sauté until soft and golden brown. Set aside.

Divide the meat into 4 equal portions and shape into burger patties. Season with salt and pepper and
cook over medium heat until the meat is no longer pink. Put aside the burger patties and wipe out your skillet.

Assemble the patty melts. Take a slice of bread, add a slice of cheese, then some of the sautéed onion, the cooked patties, another slice of cheese and finally top with another slice of bread.

Melt half of the remaining butter over medium heat in the cleaned skillet and cook the patty melts until golden brown on each side. Adding the remaining butter when flipping the sandwiches. The patty melts should be cooked until golden brown and crispy.

Slice in half diagonally and serve.
